Abstract :
A new reflective-type variable attenuator for PCS applications using a backward-wave quadrature hybrid and four PIN diodes is presented. The proposed configuration uses a single bias line for the four diodes with each two being separated by quarter wavelength transmission line. Simulation and experimental results show that an attenuation range of 14.3 dB with a maximum phase variation of 3° can easily be achieved. The attenuation and group delay exhibit good flatness with a variation of ±0.06 dB in attenuation and ±20 ps in group delay over a 100MHz bandwidth.
