AWACS Concept for ATM Wireless Broadband Multimedia Communications

Wireless ATM is receiving a significant attention as a solution for wireless access systems. There are many ongoing activities within European ACTS program which are related to emerging ATM oriented wireless networks at various frequencies such as 5, 19, 40 and 60 GHz. This paper presents ACTS - AWACS project results and these results indicate that AWACS concept which considers the capacity of bit rates up to 155 Mb/s seems to have a considerable potential for the emerging HIPERLINK standard in Europe and therefore viable concept for broadband multimedia communications.
