Abstract :
Cutting tools with durable coatings are widely used in industry. Tools having coatings made from titanium nitride are most popular. They are used for structural and tool steels machining. Nevertheless their durability is not too high during the machining of hard materials. The reason for this fact consists in a high degree of adhesive interaction due to which the temperature in the cutting zone is increased and the action of water vapors and oxygen, resulting in coating softening, takes place. The durability of the compound coatings is three times more than for coatings made from titanium nitride during the machining of high temperature alloys and stainless steels. While machining titanium alloys, certain coatings do not provide the tools durability increase. This can be explained by the fact that titanium nitride forms adhesion welding bridges at cutting temperatures above 300°C.
