Abstract :
Hierarchical coding based on adaptive multilevel bit-interleaved channels is discussed. The proposed code construction has advantages in the simplified design, robustness against channel variations and flexibility in matching itself to the associated source encoder. Multilevel coded modulation with multistage decoding, and bit-interleaved coded modulation are special cases of this general framework
