Abstract
Computer simulations of light emission emitted side-on of diffuse and of diffuse columnar arcs are compared with high-speed video recordings. ne test setup consists of AMF contacts. Main current pulses of 15 kA and 28 kA (peak value of sinusoidal 50 Hz half wave) followed after the gap was fully open. During gap opening a pre-current of 15 A was used. The optical observation of the arc occurred side-on under two different viewing directions, perpendicular to each other. The computer images reproduce typical trends as e.g. stronger light intensities in front of the cathode caused by the higher plasma densities in this region.
