Abstract
A precision terrain height measurement sensor has been developed providing 1 inch height accuracy for short range applications. This sensor was developed to provide inputs into an automatic control system for multiple uses, both military and commercial. Military applications include mine plow control and active suspension control. Commercial applications include machine positioning systems for agriculture and road construction, and ride control for off-road vehicles. The system was designed using precision terrain height monopulse/interferometric techniques adapted from airborne terrain following/avoidance, air-to-ground ranging and 3-D reconnaissance modes. A demonstration radar was developed and tested. Accuracy down to 0.3 inches has been demonstrated
