Abstract
Construction and instrumentation of very fast ion chambers with pulse duration of less than 60 ns are detailed. A long ion chamber referred to as the PLIC (Panofsky´s long ion chamber) is the primary diagnostic used to locate losses in all the SLC (Stanford Linear Collider) transport lines. Accurately locating beam loss with the use of fudicial cables and coaxial switches is discussed. The design, the pulse length, the performance and operation are considered.<>
