Abstract :
The call admission control in an ATM network is one of very important research items because acceptance of a new call will influence the required quality of service (QoS) of the existing calls. We study the admission control by introducing a virtual bandwidth concept of a bursty traffic which is obtained by using a two-state MMPP approximating the situation where homogeneous calls are multiplexed into a link. The virtual bandwidth of a traffic is determined by its bursty characteristics, its QoS requirement and the link capacity. The results show that the performance of a superposition of bursty traffics can be evaluated by their virtual bandwidths more precisely than by their peak bit rates and mean bit rates, superposition of homogeneous calls belonging to one class. Based on the virtual bandwidth of call we propose a call admission procedure which requires small computation and simple bandwidth management
