Abstract
A novel microwave transition is described, comprising a microstrip line inserted through a slotline. It makes use of electromagnetic coupling between two orthogonal substrates. No metal to metal contact is required. Insertion losses are less than ¿2dB over at least a 10% bandwidth. Not relying on a physical contact gives the transition advantages in reliability, tolerance and the number of times the connection can be made and broken. Because of the simple design, entirely comprised of microwave substrates, the transition offers a low cost alternative to conventional microwave connectors.
