Abstract
We demonstrated highly efficient ultra-low-photon-defect resonantly diode-pumped Er-doped cryo-cooled laser. Slope efficiency of 71.5% per cavity absorbed power was achieved at 78 degK in these initial experiments. It was shown that cryo-laser resonantly pumped by "full-width" laser diodes can be temperature tuned to achieve better optimized overall performance. Maximum quasi-CW power of over 63W is reported. Overall Er:YAG cryo-laser performance can be significantly improved by implementing the pump diode spectral narrowing, and advanced beam shaping of the existing diode bar stacks.
