Abstract :
Old generation 120 Mb/s TDMA modems for INTELSAT systems were characterized by operational criticality and high cost. The difficulties existed especially in the demodulator function, due to the need for fast acquisition of both the carrier frequency and phase. The paper describes a new generation of TDMA modems which adopts a numerical approach for carrier phase extraction based on a modified Viterbi & Viterbi (1983) carrier phase estimator
