Abstract
Summary form only given. Visible broad-area laser diodes (BA-LDs) are of high interest due to their newly-emerging display application, because of their high chromatic purity and high brightness. Sony developed a 2005-inch laser display system which was exhibited at the EXPO 2005 Aichi Japan for six months. For this application, near-field pattern (NFP) is one of the most important characteristics because NFP directly affects the image quality of the display. We have succeeded to control the NFP of BA-LDs by optimizing the lateral structure, although it had been reported that the performance of BA-LDs can not be changed so much by altering the wave-guiding structure1´.
