Abstract
A high current beam of subrelativistic ions accelerated in an induction linac is predicted (in some circumstances) to exhibit unstable growth of current fluctuations at high frequencies ( nu approximately 100 MHz). The instability is driven by the interaction between the beam and accelerator modules at frequencies close to a cavity resonance. The extent of unstable growth depends on features of the coupling impedance, beam parameters, and total pulse and accelerator lengths. Transient and asymptotic analyses are presented.<>
