Abstract :
A novel ray tracing technique based on an efficient Monte Carlo algorithm for the analysis of wave propagation within highly multimode optical waveguides with rough surfaces is presented. While the Monte Carlo algorithm takes mode mixing caused by surface irregularities into account, the ray tracing technique itself provides the analysis of wave propagation in highly multimode optical waveguides with arbitrary shapes. The influence of surface waveguide parameters on wave propagation are investigated for the case of a symmetric slab waveguide.
