Abstract
This paper proposes a generalised framework to accommodate different approaches to the architectures of autonomous systems. A number of fundamental principles for the structure are enunciated and their application to several architectures described in the literature is shown to illustrate the generality of these principles. A more detailed analysis of the inner structure of each principle and their interconnections is also shown.
