Abstract :
A transparent Tb3+ and Yb3+ codoped oxyfluoride glass-ceramic containing CaF2 nanocrystals was prepared through thermal treatment to develop UV laser media. The visible emission spectra of the as-made glass and the glass-ceramic with the excitation of a 374 mW 974 nm diode laser are obtained. The intense emission at 381 nm could be attributed to the change of the ligand field of Tb3+ and Yb3+ ions because of the incorporation of some Tb3+ and Yb3+ ions into CaF2 nanocrystals and the enhanced fluorescence branching ratio of this emission in the glass-ceramic. The results indicate the Tb3+ and Yb3+ codoped oxyfluoride glass ceramic is a promising material for UV solid state laser or fiber laser.
