Environmental management started late in China and it is since 1990s that more and more attention was paid to environmental management in China´s mineral industry. The paper reviews China´s regulatory framework and practices of environmental management in mineral industry and identifies the weaknesses of current laws and regulations, inefficient environmental administration, inadequate corporate environmental management of mining companies as well as poor public participation in environmental management. With reference to successful experiences home and abroad, the paper offers concrete suggestions for the realization of more effective environmental management in China´s mineral industry. These suggestions include defining uniform environmental management standards, streamlining powers and responsibilities of government agencies, motivating mining companies´ initiatives in fulfilling their environmental commitments as well as encouraging public participation in all phases of environmental management.
