Abstract
This paper reports on the first successful demonstration of experimental visualization and phase velocity evaluation for internal electromagnetic waves propagating backward in a two-dimensional double-negative metamaterial structure. The backward waves were visualized by the live electrooptic imaging technique in a real-time manner and their phase velocity was evaluated through analyses of their video images. This experimental method might initiate a novel tool based on electrooptic imagery for intuitive analyses and diagnoses of two-dimensional metamaterials.
