Abstract
We present details of a framework for the design of robust multivariable controllers using an expert system. Two of the important characteristics of such a system are an expressive means of defining the target specifications and a strategy for rule base control which handles conflicts in the design specifications. Algorithms are described which ensure the design gradually improves (for which we also define the ´state´ of the design), provides action when it does not and guarantees that the iterative design procedure will terminate.
