Abstract
Network structure is recognized as an increasing important mechanism of value safeguard in interorganizational relationships. This paper employs social network approach to examine how smaller and vulnerable firms use their network structure as governance mechanisms in collaborations with stronger and prominent firms. We identify three distinctive types of tie-formation strategies and illustrate contingents that affect the choice of network strategies.
