Abstract
The suitability of return-to-zero(RZ) coding for high data-rate ultra-long haul transmission has attracted a huge interest in the development of RZ integrated optical modulators. This paper provides the latest information on this development. A computer simulation model which can be employed to predict the performance of such modulators is presented. The frequency responses of the electrical reflection coefficient S11, optical transmission coefficient S21, and half-wave driving voltage V¿ over the frequency range from 1MHz up to 20 GHz have been obtained. At the operating frequency 10.66 GHz, the computed S11 is < 10 dB and V¿ < 8V for an open-end design with a length of 2.1 cm, this is in very good agreement with measured data.
