Abstract
This contribution examines a number of control design methods to provide PID control of high-order processes. Usually, a low-order approximate model of the plant is used for control design so that the resulting model-based controller has a PID structure. Here, a controller is designed using the full-order model of the plant and its order subsequently reduced to obtain a PID structure. Comparative insight into the appropriateness of the control design methods to undergo reduction to a PID form is provided. The main motivation for the investigation stems from a project into the control of intensified processes, which are usually at least third-order dominant systems due to the importance of the sensor and actuator dynamics.
