Abstract
The workshop “Data and Telecom: Convergence of Hardware” will discuss which optical hardware is/will be shared by data and telecom applications, taking account of the growing demands placed by capacity, power and cost. By “data”, we mean data center, supercomputer, rack-to-rack, etc. communication. By telecom we mean fiber-to-the home, metro, and long-haul communication. The workshop will examine how innovations in high-volume data applications percolate up to telecom, and how innovations in lower-volume telecom applications sift down to data. An example of data applications feeding technology to telecom is the XFP transceiver, and an example of telecom applications feeding technology to data is electronic equalization.
