Abstract :
HF (high frequency) propagation over oceans can achieve long distance, low cost communications and it is one of the most important communication methods among all ocean communications. Some aspects of propagation in the HF band are analyzed. ICEPAC (Ionospheric Communication Enhanced Profile Analysis and Circuit Prediction Program) based mainly on calculations of transmission loss from measurements of field-strength is applied in this paper. A comparative study of the commonly used HF propagation models is presented. The transmission loss in HF band is introduced and the ground-wave propagation over China oceans is deeply investigated. The results from ocean ground-wave propagation were compared with predicted data of the median system loss generated by ICEPAC. The simulations show that HF prediction model ICEPAC with correct settings outputs the approximate right communication status of Chinese oceans in HF band and this has been a great value to reliable communications.
