Abstract :
The characteristic of the D/sup -/ beam produced in an RF-driven multicusp volume source are reported as a function of source power and equivalent current. These characteristics are compared to those of H/sup -/ beams from RF-driven sources, and to those of H/sup -/ and D/sup -/ from filament-based sources. At the same equivalent H/sup -/ current, the normalized RMS emittance using the RF antenna was about the same as that using filaments. At the optimum filter field strength, the D/sup -/ current was up to 20-30% higher. Since the optimum filter field strength was higher with RF, the electron-to-D/sup -/ current ration was lower with RF. All these findings favor the use of RF to form a high-brightness negative ion beam.<>
