Abstract
This paper presents a unified, step-by-step design procedure for a 4 phase 5 horsepower (hp) switched reluctance motor (SRM) from the first principles of electromagnetics. Following the design of the machine, finite element software is used to analyze the machine. From the design parameters, aligned inductances, unaligned inductances and average torque are calculated analytically and compared with finite element analysis results. Finally, dynamic characteristic of the SRM is simulated from a non-linear model developed in Matlab/Simulink environment for better control operation.
