Abstract :
We present an analytical method to evaluate the performance of the buffered Banyan network based ATM switches. The switching elements in the interconnection network are provided with a buffer which is shared among all the inlets and outlets of the element. This approach is a iterative computational method. It is based on an approximate discrete time finite-state Markov model of a switch. We present an exact analysis of the 2×2 and 4×4 switching element with a shared-buffer. Performance measures of interest in the ATM switching fabric are computed. The load, buffer-size and input/output size has an influence on the performance which is demonstrated in curves. Compared with the simulation method, the analytical technique is more accurate especially in heavy load conditions
