Standard master for regional telecontrol (SMART) for distribution networks

The author discusses the planned implementation of computer based telecontrol master stations for use in the distribution regions of Eskom, the electricity utility of South Africa. The requirements for and the philosophy behind this project, known as SMART, are given and the advantages and disadvantages of the standardised approach are highlighted. The conclusions drawn from the analysis of the benefits of the standardised approach proved that there are major financial and technical advantages for Eskom
