Abstract :
The contamination flashover and disruption of a power system due to external insulation pollution have become a major problem in the electrical power industry. Xinjiang in China is located at the edge of a desert region so that the contamination is more serious. Through many investigations in power system and research tests in the laboratory, many effective measures against contamination flashover have been put into use. It is shown from practice that the room temperature vulcanizing silicone coating is more appropriate to the desert climate condition than other measures. In this paper, the various properties of the silicone coating and the electrical performance of an insulator with such a coating are described
