  • Abstract
Over the past several years, green roof techniques have been widely used in Beijing, China, to better utilize rainwater, improve air quality and reduce city heat island effects. By the end of 2008, a few hundred buildings had been constructed with green roofs, with a total green roof area of more than 1 million m2. Currently, more than 100,000 m2 of new green roofs are being created per annum in Beijing. The tough natural environment in Beijing, such as very cold winters and long periods of drought, means that great efforts from scientists, engineers, and landscape architects are required to ensure the success of these green roofs. This paper introduces: A. the relevant policies and regulations which enable the rapid application of green roof techniques in Beijing; B. new research and technical publications/specifications which help to design and construct green roofs correctly; and C. maintenance requirements. Several examples of the existing green roofs will be presented in the paper.
