Abstract :
This paper outlines a three step approach as an effective method for higher level system functions to be linked to lower level building block failure modes when completing a design FMEA (failure modes and effects analysis). The first step involves using functional modeling to understand key functions in the system. These key functions are then used in a parameter diagram to identify potential failure modes and failure causes linked to the key functions identified. The last step is to input the parameter diagram information into a modified FMEA format that links the higher level functions, failure modes and failure causes to the lower level building blocks and associated failure modes. This method can focus a design community on the failure modes of interest, and in the process, can highlight critical dependencies and interfaces between other sub-systems or components. This method should be implemented early in the design process so risks can be mitigated as efficiently as possible.
