Abstract
A biologically-inspired visual pattern recognition system, namely the Cyvis-1, is reported. The system is composed of a series of modularized processing specializations, each one dedicated to the processing of a specific image attribute such as edge-elements, color, regions, texture and movement. These specialized processing pathways are interconnected among themselves at their many hierarchical levels in order to speed up the recognition process. The biological principles that have been adopted as well as the functional structure of the proposed system and the data structures and processing strategies to be used in each of the processing specialization, are also discussed
