Abstract
To overcome the difficulties associated with attempting to measure highly variable deformations of the anterior cruciate ligament, a study was done using a unique model of a knee joint. The femur and tibial condyles were modeled from transparent epoxy resin, and the ligaments were formed from an epoxy monomer treated to make it elastic. The model was manipulated in a way that simulated actual knee motion, and the deformation and strain the model ligament underwent were observed directly. The photoelastic method was employed to measure and analyze deformation and strain distribution on the entire surface of the model ligament
