Abstract :
The authors have established an empirical criterion for electrical breakdown in vacuum based on macroscopic electrical field strength and voltage. It contains two parameters that have to be adapted to different materials, manufacturing and conditioning processes by statistically evaluated high-voltage tests under lightning surges, and field calculations. Once they are known, breakdown voltages of proposed vacuum insulations such as interrupters can be estimated from field calculations
