  • Abstract
    Mobile satellite services provided to the people, and objects, traveling by land, sea, or air, are compared with corresponding terrestrial-only services. Parameters such as service quality, operating environment, spectral efficiency in a multibeam (multicell)-Doppler-effected Ricean channel, choice of modulation, coding, and multiple access-constrained by equipment miniaturization and price-are analyzed. It is concluded that innovative satellite systems such as barostationary satellites could offer compatibility with cellular systems and superior performance
