Abstract :
In this paper, a battery management system (BMS) of a lead-acid battery pack for a series hybrid electric vehicle (SHEV) shuttle bus is presented. The BMS is a necessary component for an optimal operation of power-train in the SHEV shuttle bus including for timely detection of an abnormal condition during charging and discharging the battery pack. The presented BMS consists of a central management unit (transmitter) and a user interface unit (receiver). The crucial indicator of the present state of the battery is the state-of-charge (SOC). The function test of the BMS is concentrated on the control of the generator-set under consideration of the state-of charge which is determined by the open-circuit method combined with the coulomb counting method. The accuracy of the SOC determination was verified by the comparison with the specific gravity method.
