Digital compression-a carrier´s perspective

This paper outlines a number of aspects considered by France Telecom during its evaluation of digital compression technology, which culminated firstly in its use of `Digital Satellite News Gathering´ (DSNG) for coverage of the Paris-Dakar rally in January 1994, secondly in a compressed digital service from France to New Caledonia, and thirdly in the development of a digital transatlantic offering combining the facilities of France Telecom, Maxat and Keystone Communications Corp.
