Abstract
Under the auspices of the European Space Agency, the European Space industries are about to embark on a new application satellite programme, namely that of earth resources. This paper describes the conceptual design of the electrical power system for the power and energy demanding, ERS1 mission. The power system concept proposed for this low earth orbit application is based on that of the SPOT platform and consists of a battery defined power bus together with a solar array shunt regulator able to control on both battery re-charge current and a selectable end of charge voltage level.
