Abstract :
Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) have proven to be the state-of-art technology due to their distinctive advantages such as low harmonic content, reduced losses, modularity and flexibility in converter design. Despite of several advantages, there are few operational challenges such as circulating current suppression control, capacitor voltage balancing and fault tolerant operation which need to be addressed. This paper presents a comprehensive review on basic operation of MMC along with different control strategies.
