Abstract :
The #2 Paper Machine at Sappi´s Skowhegan, Maine Plant (USA) started up in September of 1986. It is a 300 inch wide coated free sheet paper machine driven by a 450 foot long lineshaft. Powering the lineshaft is a 4500 horsepower steam turbine. Due to an electrical power failure in 1996, the machine´s lineshaft oversped and substantial damage occurred to the turbine´s rotor and stator. This paper describes how five weeks of paper machine downtime was avoided by replacing the turbine with a 4000 horsepower electric motor.
