Abstract :
This paper describes a front-end amplifier with programmable gain and shaping time. The amplifier consists of two stages. The first stage is a charge sensitive preamplifier with pole-zero cancellation. The second stage is a transimpedance amplifier and implements a second order shaping function. The tunability of the circuit is achieved selecting, by mean of digital control signals, the value of the components employed in the feedback loop of the second stage. For a given shaping time, the gain can be changed with accuracy better than 3% without any tuning of the transconductance of the core amplifiers. Implemented in a 0.25 μm CMOS technology, the circuit occupies an area of 0.1 mm2 and dissipates 2 mW from a 2.5 V power supply.
