Abstract
The author presents the lightning protection problems both in general terms and as a technical evaluation. He shows the importance of both the requirements of the protection units and their placing in a typical installation. A thorough understanding of lightning protection requirements is developed, removing the misconceptions that currently exist within the electrical industry regarding protection systems. He also reduces the lightning protection problems to an equivalent circuit, and then shows how this approach can be used to solve transient voltage problems
