Abstract
This paper discusses a reliable mode-search strategy required for the application of mode-matching to the analysis of 3-dimensional discontinuities. The strategy has been developed by studying practical problems encountered in applying generalized transverse resonance to ridged waveguide. Application of the strategy will enable the design of more reliable and efficient algorithms for the analysis and optimisation of passive waveguide structures such as filters and transitions.<>
