Abstract :
Conventional phase controlled rectifiers are employed in electrolytic applications. As known, phase control produces a variable injection of reactive power to the electrical system. To compensate this problem large passive filters are always required. These filters yield poor power system reliability and demands physical space at the industrial site. This paper presents an upgraded method of power conversion to eliminate both problems. The result is a compact and reliable rectifier system for high current applications with enhanced power system compatibility. Complete results for various operating points and an overall performance evaluation for a typical 4×40 kA industrial facility are evaluated against conventional and alternative solutions already published.
