Abstract
Interconnected intelligent appliances and automation subsystems may be the key element in building power-efficient and tenant-friendly homes. The LONWORKS® networking platform was introduced by the Echelon Corporation in 1989 to enable communication among standard devices: HVAC devices, security panels, closed-caption cameras thus creating truly distributed control systems. This presentation will also include a discussion of conceptual components for home automation: appliances with built-in power line communications, and integration of LONWORKS® devices into the Open System Gateway initiative (OSGi) framework, with subsequent implementation of the energy savings service
