  • Abstract
Static VAr systems can improve the reliability of a system by increasing transient stability margins. The authors formulate the problem of investigating transient stability improvements due to static VAr compensators as a probabilistic stability problem, in which several aspects that affect system stability are considered: the probability of the fault, the probability of fault location, the probable performance of the protection system and the load variation curve. The authors determine the improvement in reliability margins attributable to a given static VAr compensator installation
