  • Abstract
Frame relay, used as a 56 kbps wide-area network (WAN) access technology for data networking and Internet connectivity is growing at an alarming rate. A common misconception in the data networking field is that frame relay is not well suited for digital and audio transport over WANs. Hence an investigation of video and audio traffic over a LocalTalk to a 56 kbps frame relay network is discussed for potential use in a community network. Network traffic and statistics from several IP video and audio applications were measured and analyzed. The results show that packet audio and packet video at rates varying from 16 to 56 kbps (with video as high as 6 frames per second) can be transported over a LocalTalk-frame relay network with reasonable quality
