Abstract
The author looks at direct lightning hits to shield wires and conductors of overhead power lines. The random nature of lightning incidence is analysed using probability theory. Closed form approximate expressions are derived for the rate of back-flashovers and shielding failure flashovers as functions of the critical current and tower geometry
