Abstract
Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology is investigated as a method to enhance the existing transport network by increasing bit rate transmission. This article focuses on the optical rings network supervision, operation and maintenance. The architecture considered is based on optical rings which are connected by an ATM cross-connect. The proposed operation and maintenance concept deals with the identification of layered network model functions and the maintenance signals required for failure localization
