Abstract :
By leveraging MMIC circuits and GaAs processing expertise gleaned from military funded programs such as the MIMIC Program and GBR (Ground Based Radar), Raytheon at its Advanced Device Center (ADC) has initiated a thrust into commercial markets for MMIC products. Adapting microwave technology advances for use in commercial products is the simplest part of the Dual Use equation. Historically, military designs are application-specific MMIC solutions tailored to high-performance military system needs. Efforts are being made to make military designs as "generic" as possible, particularly under the MIMIC program. Market-driven application specific standard products (ASSPs) required a major change in focus that proved difficult but achievable. Maintaining a balance between cost competitive high volume quality manufacturing and the requirements of supplying MMIC components to full military specifications is a challenge which is being met. This paper will discuss how Raytheon has addressed the difficulties inherent in defense conversion.<>
